I like pizza 2 - Utopia

공기평 작가의 작품은 최근 퍼니퍼니 시리즈 이후 형식상 어둠과 무거움에서 밝음과 가벼움으로 전환하고 있다. 이전에는 부조리한 현대사회의 야만성에 주목, 개인과 사회의 역사적, 이념적 상처의 기억을 표현했었다. 그러나 이제는 화려한 색채, 이집트 부조 조각 양식, 이야기가 있는 만화 형식 등 다채로운 기법을 사용하고 있다.

특히 피자 시리즈는 현대 자본주의의 상징적인 음식 가운데 하나인 피자 위에 다양한 이미지를 구현하여 현재의 우리의 모습을 생각하게 한다.

이번 전시의 타이틀은 ‘낙원’으로, 피자를 먹고 자본주의에 길들여진 현재의 우리 모습 바로 이 자리에서 유토피아를 꿈꿀 수 있고, 또 그럴 수 밖에 없는 필연을 이야기하고 있다.

부조처럼 입체적으로 표현 된 피자 위에 만화 같은 입체 그림들이 유토피아를 구현한다. 빵 위의 토핑처럼 구현된 이미지와 늘어진 치즈들이 어우러져 지상낙원을 노래한다. 이미지들은 서로 부조화를 이루거나 때론 난해한 도상처럼 얽혀 있기도 한다.  중첩된 이미지들은 해독 불가능한 기호처럼 때론 엉뚱한 감각을 이끌어 내기도 한다.

이번 전시를 통해 이상향의 현대적 꿈에 대한 작가의 상상을 마주할 수 있을 것이다.                                                                         (글.  이 명애)

The works of Mr. Kong Kipyung have changed from darkness and heaviness to brightness and lightness as a matter of form since FunnyFunny series. He used to focus on brutality of irrational modern society, describing mostly the memories of individual, historical, or ideological injuries. However, currently he likes to adopt diversified methods such as fancy colors, Egyptian relief sculpture mode, storytelling cartoon style, etc.

 Especially Pizza Series describe a variety of images on pizza, which is one of the symbolic foods in modern capitalism, letting us ponder on our present selves.

The works titled ‘Utopia’ talk about the inevitability that we tamed by capitalism could dream of paradise at this place and have no other choice.

Expressed like in three-dimensional relief, cartoon-styled works describe utopia. All possible imaginary toppings and drooping cheese are like the songs of utopia. The images are mismatched and interwoven with others like complicated stuff. Overlapped images draw out unusual sensitivities as if indecipherable signs can do.

 This exhibition can let you face the artist's imagination about modern dream of utopia realized on pizza.
